Workplace etiquette
What to include in a slow-reply Slack status
A slow-reply status should make it clear that you are still reachable, set a realistic response expectation, and show urgent work where to go.
- 01
Set the response expectation
Use βslow repliesβ or βdelayed responsesβ when you are still reachable but cannot answer at your normal speed. That is clearer than an away status when you are actually online.
- 02
Explain only what helps
Teammates usually need to know your availability, not every reason behind it. Add context like catching up, mobile only, or heads down only when it changes how they should contact you.
- 03
Include a time or urgent path
If normal response time resumes later, say when. For longer delays, tell people how to flag a blocker or who else can help.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good slow-to-respond Slack status?+
Use a short message like βSlow replies today,β βCatching up, delayed replies,β or βMobile only, slow replies.β Add an end time or urgent contact when it helps teammates.
Should I say why my Slack replies are delayed?+
Only if the reason helps your team. Response speed, return time, and an urgent path are usually more useful than personal details.
Is slow to respond the same as out of office?+
No. Slow to respond means you are still reachable but replies may take longer. Out of office usually means you are not working or checking Slack normally.
